Sustainability isn’t just a trend; it’s an essential part of a forward-thinking business strategy. While the term may feel overused, it’s critical to acknowledge that many SMEs lack the resources and expertise to take the next step when it comes to recognising and addressing sustainability issues and implementing strategies.

Running a business is tough, and with increasing demands from markets and stakeholders, now is the time to act.

Is a sustainable mindset important?

Sustainability is not just a buzzword or a onetime effort, but constantly hearing and reading about sustainability can make it seem daunting and less significant, sparking reactions like “here we go again” or “there’s nothing new to say.”

However, it’s important to recognise that for many SME businesses, sustainability discussions are often echo-chambers, lacking the right people behind them to confidently take that next step at the scale they need.

Running a business is already challenging, and the business landscape is only becoming more demanding. Therefore, it’s essential to act now, get support and plan ahead.

Ensuring your brand and business are built on solid foundations and equipped with the right assets is key to meeting the growing expectations of key stakeholders and adapting to dynamic markets relating to sustainability.

Failing to address and adapt to rapid changes locally and globally can result in your brand being seen as an example of poor Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)…and no business wants to be stuck with that label or perceived as out of touch with the needs and demands of our rapidly evolving environment.

Our 4-stage workflow provides a holistic approach to guiding our clients to becoming more sustainable through a robust framework set to challenge, identify, and make tangible benefits. Having researched and been through the process, we have developed these 4 stages to help different business owners/entrepreneurs enter the journey at different stages beyond the accreditation. The stages are in place to ensure the strategy is embedded in the heart of the company and it is in line with the business strategy and positioning of the brand moving forward.

Diagnostic Heatmap

Understanding what prompted this shift or renewed focus on sustainability is critical, including why sustainability matters to the business and what goals they aim to achieve through this process. These insights will form the bedrock of our workshops, designed to stimulate different perspectives and generate responses to kickstart the wider journey.

Strategic CSR Discovery Workshop

We dig deep into all aspects of sustainability, evaluating current initiatives in light of existing or newly set future goals. This goal-setting process helps identify gaps and opportunities for improvement. These sessions are all about continuously asking questions to clarify objectives and drive deeper insights that can develop a cohesive branding and sustainability positioning that clearly defines what the brand stands for.

Communications plan for rollout

Once we establish what the brand stands for, the focus shifts to the communication strategy. How will stakeholders respond to changes, and how can we communicate them sincerely? We report on insights and conduct group work, ensuring that clients and the broader team are onboard, to reinforce the improvements and implementations being made to the business, whether that’s achieving accreditation through to website redesign.

Our packages include but are not limited to:

  • Impact Reporting
  • Stakeholder and crisis management
  • Employee Journey onboarding
  • Internal Repositioning
  • Begin your sustainability accreditation journey

Continuous support and follow-up

As previously mentioned, sustainability isn’t a one-and-done kind of deal, it’s an ongoing and often challenging process. After rolling out your communications and completing the scope of work, we provide ongoing support at intervals that best suit your needs and requirements.

Our packages include:

  • Progress report
  • Future goal setting
  • Regular check-ins
  • Accreditation check-ins

CSR vs ESG? What you need to know

You may have heard these terms, and sometimes they are used interchangeably, but what do they mean.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR):

  • Focus: CSR is about what a company does voluntarily to contribute positively to society and the environment. It’s like the company is saying, “We want to do good because it’s the right thing to do.”
  • Activities: This can include things like donating to charities, reducing carbon emissions, improving working conditions, or supporting community projects.
  • Approach: CSR is often about the company’s values and how it wants to be a good corporate citizen. It’s more about the company’s identity and ethical standpoint.

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG):

  • Focus: ESG is about measuring and managing risks and opportunities related to environmental, social, and governance factors.
  • Components:
    • Environmental (E): How the company impacts the planet (e.g., energy use, waste management, climate change initiatives).
    • Social (S): How the company manages relationships with employees, suppliers, customers, and communities (e.g. human resource practices, product safety, diversity and inclusion).
    • Governance (G): How the company is run e.g. board structure, executive compensation, corruption, and shareholder rights.
  • Approach: ESG is more about assessing and reporting on these factors to ensure long-term business success and appeal to investors who are concerned about these issues.

Our Partnership

Working together to help SMEs to achieve CSR Accreditation

Since 2014, at Business Clan we’ve helped clients frame/reframe their business problems and shape/reshape their brand within the sector they play in. By being strategy-led, we develop a strategic approach, starting with discovery workshops to eliminate guesswork when making business decisions and identify the root causes of our clients’ problems. This enables us to identify and uncover optimal solutions and see how sustainable forward-thinking can be embedded into brand value and business operations to improve desirability in competitive scenarios.

Alex Hughes founded Auxilium Business Consulting in 2017 and helps service-based small businesses to take a helicopter view of their business and implement effective procedures and processes to help them grow and thrive. She is passionate about ensuring that sustainable impacts are at the core of small business processes and ethics and that core employees understand the impacts they have already made. She also suggests and helps implement additional ways to reduce their carbon footprint, save money and ultimately gain appropriate accreditations.

Our Awards & Accreditations

Over recent years, both SMEs have actively led the way with responsible initiatives and ethical business practices.

We are both proudly CSR Accredited. Business Clan gained CSR Accreditation in 2024, while Auxilium earned a Silver Accreditation in 2021, with recertification set for early 2025.
