2026: Momentum, Confidence and Opportunity

As we step into 2026, there is a renewed sense of momentum across the UK SME landscape that is worth recognising, celebrating and building upon.

Despite the challenges of recent years, the UK remains a nation driven by entrepreneurs. Today, there are around 5.7 million private sector businesses and an incredible 99.9% of them are SMEs. Even more encouragingly, these businesses support around 60% of private sector employment, in turn powering livelihoods, communities and innovation across the country.

What’s striking is not just how many SMEs exist, but how many continue to start. In Q1 2025 alone, nearly 90,000 new businesses were registered, a 2.8% increase on the same period in the previous year. That tells a powerful story: ambition is alive, confidence is rebuilding and people are still choosing to create, invest and grow.

One of the most exciting shifts we’re seeing as we move into 2026 is the pace at which SMEs are embracing smarter ways of working. Around 35% of UK SMEs are now actively using AI, with many more planning to adopt it in the near future. What was once seen as complex or experimental is becoming practical, accessible and impactful and helping businesses save time, improve decision-making and scale more confidently.

At Business Clan, we see this every day. Founders and leadership teams are no longer asking if they should modernise, they’re asking how to do it well. The opportunity in 2026 isn’t about chasing trends; it’s about applying the right tools, strategies and thinking to create real momentum.

This year is about clarity and execution. It’s about focusing on what works, sharpening foundations and turning effort into results. Across our service lines, our aim remains the same: to help SMEs move forward with confidence, supported by insight, structure and trusted advice.

Above all, 2026 feels like a year of possibility. SMEs are adapting, investing and re-energising. With the right support, clear thinking and purposeful action, the opportunity ahead is significant.

To our clients, partners and wider community — thank you for being part of this journey. We’re excited about what lies ahead and look forward to building the next chapter together.
