#InspiringInclusion of Women at Work for International Women’s Day 2024

This year’s International Women’s Day theme focuses on the inclusion of women within the workplace – a principle that resonates deeply with everyone here at Business Clan.

In both our personal and professional lives, we are regularly reminded of the strength and diversity all women bring to the fabric of our society and industries, and this is particularly relevant in our organisation. To celebrate IWD 2024 we spoke with various members of our team to find out more about their personal experiences of gender inclusion, the inspiring figures in their lives and how they envisage the workplace evolving in the future to enhance women’s empowerment.

Who inspires you and why?

Among us, our accountant, Vicky, finds her greatest inspiration close to home from her daughter, who

has always been a hard worker, never shouting about her successes. She inspires me every day as she’s growing into a truly lovely, humble yet ambitious, self-motivated young woman who makes me want to be a better person.

Michelle, our Head of Accounting, looks up to figures like Mother Teresa, whose

selfless love for the underprivileged goes beyond bounds to show indiscrimination towards human life irrespective of gender, colour and fortune.

The variety in sources of inspiration among our staff beautifully illustrates the perpetual cycle where inspiration and aspiration feed into and reinforce each other.

How have the women in your life personally or professionally inspired or influenced you?

At Business Clan, where a staggering 85% of our staff are currently women, we stand proud of each individual, supporting them daily as they tackle challenges head-on. They in turn have been inspired by other strong female professionals. Vanessa, our Head of HR, reminisces about Rachel, a leading Geotechnics engineer at a company she worked at before Business Clan.

In a male-dominated industry, she rose to lead the team nationally and globally. Rachel was extremely skilled at her job, a true leader of people and championed girls in STEM through workshops and work experience. All this whilst raising a young family, always smiling and demonstrating the endless possibilities of success. Inspiring.

I often think of Rachel when things get tough. Her positivity has stayed with me over the years. She was a true mentor and always reminded people of the good they have done, and the successes achieved.

Similarly, our social media consultant, Leeza , shares her gratitude towards female leaders who paved her career path in the early days.

My very first boss was a highly inspirational Marketing Manager who supported me as I embarked on my career in marketing in my early twenties. I had no marketing background but she took the time to help me learn and gave me some amazing opportunities that certainly helped me to move on to my next two jobs at a big publishing company and Sony Pictures. Once again my female bosses were highly inspirational, leading the way when it came to websites, ecommerce and social media marketing before they become so universally used and accepted.

Both Vanessa and Leeza are great examples of the lasting impact of positive reinforcement and mentorship for all women.

How does Business Clan make you feel included?

Highlighting this year’s theme of women’s inclusion, Vanessa voices a concern many women can relate to – the daunting return to work after maternity leave or a career break.

I’ve found that returning to work after having a child to be daunting. The eternal juggle and a lack in confidence! Business Clan has made the transition back to the workplace much easier than expected. I can work from home at hours that work with my commitments, there is always someone to speak to and help when needed and my experience feels valued by the team and clients.

Leeza, who has been with us since Business Clan was founded, shares how lucky she feels to have been recruited.

I now feel incredibly fortunate to be a part of a company that goes above and beyond when it comes to supporting women’s careers. Business Clan offered me the opportunity to transition back to work after a 5-year career break to have my children. Their flexible working ethos, belief in my capabilities and various truly inspirational female role models have made so much difference to my life (and so many others) and allowed me to pursue and develop my career in marketing whilst maintaining a great work life balance.

This culture of support and flexibility at Business Clan has been instrumental in supporting career growth and ensuring a fulfilling work-life balance.

In what ways have you witnessed gender inclusion making a positive impact in our workplace?

Regarding the importance of gender inclusion in the workplace, Vaish, our marketing assistant, states,

I think gender inclusion allows for a fair share of voice better to represent society’s needs, norms, and interests. I believe in our team; we can celebrate different opinions and ideas to develop the best solutions to our client’s problems based on their values. I think overall, it has made us better informed.

Claris, our graphic designer, who relocated from Hong Kong, is happy that she has been given the chance to continue using the design skills she has built up over the years despite having had a career break.

The returnship and flexible working programmes in Business Clan have been invaluable for women like me who want to return to the workplace after a career break while balancing family responsibilities. Over the years, we have built our careers with professional skills and solid experiences. This is the perfect opportunity for women to shine again.

Their perspectives echo our company-wide sentiment that gender inclusion and flexible working programmes can only benefit those looking to return to the workforce or balance family responsibilities.

Can you highlight any achievements by women in our company or other companies/ industries that have inspired you?

Reflecting on the journey of Business Clan, Lucy pays homage to Founder Delia and Business Development Director, Nicolle, who

have had such a huge impact on everyone at Business Clan – without their vision, determination and belief in the team (mostly women) we wouldn’t be where we are right now!

What changes would you like to see in the next 5 years to enhance gender equality and women’s empowerment in our industry/general workplace?

Looking forward, Vicky envisions a future where the workplace evolves to ensure equal opportunities, recognition, and remuneration for all genders. In 5 years, she

hopes the workplace changes even more than it is already, to ensure equal pay for both women and men. I know there is still a divide, especially in some sectors like banking, where men are more likely to have bigger salaries and be promoted. Salaries need to be structured with more transparency to avoid the ones that shout the most often getting the higher salaries. Research has consistently shown that the most productive and satisfied workers are employed by companies that do this.

Our Unwavering Commitment

Our commitment to fostering women’s inclusion in the workplace is unwavering at Business Clan. Through leadership roles, career support, and continuous opportunities for development, we not only champion the cause of gender inclusion but also embody the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion for all in every facet of our operations.

These core values have assisted us in attracting many knowledge rich and highly experienced women to our team, helping to build a strong foundation of can doers with shared values. With backgrounds in policy making, event and product marketing to careers with global retailers and blue chip and international corporations, not to mention the wealth of business experience brought to the table by our founder Delia, the stories shared today are but a glimpse into the many ways in which women at Business Clan and beyond are shaping a more inclusive and empowering future for all.
